Shoppers have stopped starting searches on Google or brand websites. Instead, they ask AI assistants for recommendations, comparisons, and purchases, leaving merchants who fail to appear in those conversations at a disadvantage.

BigCommerce and PayPal introduced PayPal Store Sync to address this shift. The integration connects a merchant’s product catalog directly to AI shopping platforms like Microsoft Copilot, Meta, and Perplexity. Available now in the BigCommerce App Marketplace, the tool allows retailers to sync inventory, pricing, and order management without building custom integrations for each AI platform.

Merchants install the app, and their product data—images, descriptions, reviews, and stock levels—becomes searchable across AI-powered shopping experiences. When a shopper finds a product through these surfaces, PayPal processes checkout, fraud detection, and dispute resolution. The merchant remains the seller of record, maintaining control over branding and customer relationships.

Preserving that direct relationship is important. Many AI shopping tools act as intermediaries, inserting themselves between brands and buyers. Store Sync balances expanded reach with retained control.

Adobe Analytics recorded a nearly 700% year-over-year increase in AI-driven retail sales during the last holiday season. The surge reflects a broader change in consumer behavior, and merchants who ignore it risk exclusion from the buying process.

The technical side of agentic commerce evolves rapidly. New protocols like MCP, A2A, and UCP appear frequently, making it hard for brands to keep pace. Store Sync handles that complexity, letting merchants focus on products rather than platform requirements.

Trust, fraud, and the role of intermediaries

During Commerce Live 2026, Michaela Weber, VP of Product, Payments at BigCommerce, framed the company’s strategy as moving the customer experience. As she put it on stage: “We launched BigCommerce Payments to alleviate the friction in moving between BigCommerce and your payment provider portal; it’s taking payments from bolted on to built in.” That same philosophy carries through PayPal Store Sync.

The addition of AI agents complicates trust. Fraud, identity verification, and chargebacks remain critical issues. An invisible layer of AI agents now transacts on behalf of consumers, making trust infrastructure essential. PayPal’s role in Store Sync is to provide that layer, using 25 years of risk management and consumer protection.

The app is available directly in the BigCommerce App Marketplace with guided onboarding and no additional technical lift. Retailers face a clear choice: adapt to where shoppers are headed or lose them to competitors.

The shift is already underway. AI will reshape shopping, and merchants must decide whether to participate.
