Walmart will build a $1.3 billion automated fulfillment hub in Carnesville, Georgia, creating about 1,000 jobs in the rural area.

Project details and timeline

The 1.5 million-square-foot facility will be located within the Franklin 85 Logistics Center, an industrial development site in Franklin County. Construction is set to start later this year, as stated in the company’s filing.

The center will use advanced automation to support Walmart’s same-day and next-day shipping network nationwide. Its design focuses on fast order processing, a key part of the retailer’s growing e-commerce operations.

Economic impact on the state

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp called the project a source of new, well-paying jobs for residents. He said it would also cut down on long commutes and align with the state’s effort to offer opportunities in all areas.

Walmart already operates 209 stores and Sam’s Club locations in Georgia, along with 11 supply-chain sites. These employ more than 65,300 people statewide. The company’s local supplier network generates over $26.2 billion in annual spending and supports roughly 167,600 supplier jobs as of fiscal year 2025.

Karisa Sprague, senior vice president of Walmart US supply chain, said the center will help deliver the speed and reliability customers expect. She added that the company looks forward to becoming part of the Carnesville community and providing career growth opportunities for workers.

For local residents, the project could mean more stable jobs closer to home. It may also shift expectations toward high-tech roles in an area known for agriculture.

Walmart’s broader supply-chain moves

In the second quarter ending July 31, 2026, Walmart’s net sales rose 5.9% to $186.10 billion. Operating income increased 28.8% to $9.38 billion, reflecting a 17.4% gain on an adjusted constant-currency basis.

In June, the retailer introduced a 30-minute-or-less delivery service in 33 U.S. markets, covering groceries, pharmacy items, and household essentials. The new hub is expected to support this service, improving rapid-delivery options in the Southeast.

The facility will span 1.5 million square feet and include automated sorting systems and loading docks built for high-volume operations. Its size makes it one of the largest logistics investments in the region recently.

The filing states that the Carnesville site will join a network of fulfillment centers aimed at reducing delivery times. The company plans to have the facility running within a few years of breaking ground. This expansion comes as retail theft incidents rise, adding pressure on supply chains to adapt quickly.
