Meijer now accepts WIC for online buys

Meijer has begun allowing shoppers in Michigan who receive USDA’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits to use those benefits for purchases made through its website or mobile app, the retailer announced Tuesday.

How the new service works

Customers must link their WIC card to the retailer’s mPerks loyalty account. Once linked, the e‑commerce platform highlights items that qualify for WIC, making it easier for families to identify eligible foods while browsing.

Orders can be delivered for free or picked up at a store, with the pickup option available at no charge for carts that total at least $35. The system also lets shoppers combine WIC‑eligible and non‑eligible items in a single transaction, provided a separate payment method covers the latter.

State officials weigh in

Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services confirmed that all Meijer locations in the state will support the online WIC shopping option. The agency described the rollout as the first of its kind in Michigan, noting that it hopes to extend the program to additional retailers in the future.

“This partnership with Meijer represents an important step forward in modernizing the WIC shopping experience by expanding digital access, reducing barriers, and providing families with greater flexibility to redeem their benefits,” said Michigan WIC Director Christina Herring in a statement.

More than 187,000 women, infants and children rely on the state’s WIC program each month, according to the department. Nationwide, the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service reported that over 6.7 million participants received WIC assistance in fiscal year 2024.

Michigan joins a growing list of states that have permitted online use of WIC benefits. Massachusetts and Washington have already opened the option, and Walmart began accepting online WIC orders in April 2025. Hy‑Vee also offers the service in several Midwestern states, including Iowa and Minnesota.

For now, Michigan’s WIC beneficiaries can place orders through the Meijer app or website, select eligible items, and receive them at home or at a nearby store without extra charge, marking a notable change in how the program is accessed.
